What is Sleep Apnea?
Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when a person's breathing is interrupted during sleep. This means the brain, and the rest of the body, may not get enough oxygen. These pauses in breathing can last from a few seconds to minutes and can occur 30 or more times in an hour. There are two types of sleep apnea: obstructive and central. Obstructive sleep apnea, the more common form, is caused by a blockage of the airway, usually when the soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses during sleep. Central sleep apnea, on the other hand, occurs when the brain fails to signal the muscles to breathe.
